Munich Re, one of the world’s largest reinsurance companies, has joined forces with Trust Edge Risk Solutions, Equirus Raghnall Brokers, and Solarelle Insurance to launch the Maldives’ first insurance policy designed specifically to address epidemic and pandemic risks.

The new programme, which becomes active on 15 September 2025, establishes an aggregate policy limit of USD 5 million.
It has been tailored for the Maldivian tourism industry, aiming to help resorts and other hospitality businesses manage potential financial setbacks should widespread health emergencies affect travel and operations.
The launch event, hosted at JEN Maldives, Malé by Shangri-La, was attended by senior representatives from each of the partner organisations along with MATI members.
The event highlighted how the initiative was a direct response to the economic setbacks faced by the Maldives during the Covid-19 pandemic, which had exposed the vulnerability of countries heavily reliant on international travel.
Tourism remains the largest contributor to the Maldives’ economy, accounting for more than 28 percent of GDP and providing tens of thousands of jobs. The disruption caused by the 2020 pandemic underscored the importance of developing tools to manage future risks.
Organisers of the scheme stated that the new policy is intended to strengthen the resilience of resorts, guesthouses, and related businesses by mitigating potential revenue losses and operational challenges linked to future outbreaks.
MATI, which has represented the Maldivian tourism sector for decades, is expected to play a key role in helping its members access the coverage. Partner representatives encouraged resorts to consider enrolling early to ensure adequate protection.
Industry observers have described the initiative as a milestone in risk management for the Maldives. While it cannot eliminate the uncertainties associated with global health crises, it provides a framework for financial preparedness and reinforces the country’s reputation as a dependable destination for international travellers.
