The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has expanded the catastrophe declaration for the severe storm and hail events that struck Queensland and New South Wales over the past week, extending it to all postcodes in both states for the period 20–27 November 2025.

Across the affected regions, insurers have so far received more than 44,600 claims arising from the severe storm and hail activity.
“As the prevailing weather system has impacted many communities across a very large area, expanding the definition of the event ensures all impacted customers are accounted for, and the additional support they may need is available,” the ICA explained.
ICA CEO, Andrew Hall, commented, “The extension of our Insurance Catastrophe Declaration points to the severity of this ongoing extreme weather that continues to impact widespread regions across both Queensland and New South Wales.
“We also acknowledge that some policyholders face a compounding impact, as their regions have been hit multiple times by different storms during this period, with damage ranging from hail dents on motor vehicles to roofs torn off by strong winds.
“Insurers are prioritising claims arising from this event, and I encourage anyone who is yet to make a claim to reach out to their insurer.”
Earlier this week, the ICA formally declared the events an Insurance Catastrophe. Suncorp also recently revealed that it expects the severe storm and hail activity impacting the two states to reach its full reinsurance retention of $350 million.
